The Current East Yorkshire 250 centre champion, and also centre champ in 2000 and 2002, Mark Williams, pics of dad Gordon racing below, Mark has also been Mablethorpe sand champion in 1990, 2000, 2001, Northern riders grass 250 champion in 2005, and Lancashire JGTRC club champion in 2006...........the family history goes back a long long way with dad Gordon, and brothers John, Gordon, Mark himself and Dave, who has just started grass this year, 2008.......................and a lot more to come with racing from this Hull Family.

A 70's pic of Gordon Williams and Bill Horncastle

Gordon williams on left

, with next to him, Jim Ormer, and Bill Horncastle, this pic with the P&Dmc Mary Hammond trophy.

Gordon Williams, with a young Gordon(

son) Dad of Mark, Kohn and Gordon, still heavily involved in grass today. Gordon senior was a sidecar driver from the 60's/70's...........a great pic of a junior prototype, and future racer.

Inter centre team championships, 2000, i think, from Cornwall, in there is, 74 Too Tall John Hartley, 75, Revin Kevin Fleetham, 68 looks like Cooperman, 71, Lee Complin, 67, Steven Hall i think,70, Richard Hall, and 72 looks like James Complin.

Revin Kevin Fleetham, from Ripon, seen here on his 250, circa 2000, Pickering.

Revin Kevin Fleetham, Ripon, seen on his 500 Jawa, hopefully soon to ride again, very fast, and still has the ability to go far, a loss to grasstrack when he retired.

John Adcock and passenger Bob Workman from a 1980's shot on the Wasp Weslake 1000.

This is John Adcock and Bob Workman on a 1000 weslake Wasp, which i think came from Mick Dawkins, the meeting i think was from Barnard Castle area.

Jon Adcock and passenger Bob Workman, with a Puma Frame.

John Hough, Now resident in Perth, Australia, sent me the photos below, and this letter by e-mail. It's very interesting, and there's some other old faces too, thanks John.

My dad raced sand and grass on a 500 triumph
i started when about 9 with the LGTJR 118 Suzuki
First ever senior grass meeting i rode a Elstar with a 500 triumph twin in it, and made the semi, i can still see Maurice Wilsons face in the pit box now as i raced him in the heat , the quater and then the semi, dont think he could belive his eyes.
Signed for Stoke @ 16 but only a few first team appearances over about 3-4 seasons then Wolves in 1981,
grass tracks most of the way through with mainly Cheshire ,Pickering and Shropshire
Returned to Speedway in 1985 with Birmingham but a big off and a spell in the intensive care was the end of that.
Rode both Moto cross and grass classes for a couple of years and then moved into moto cross for another couple of seasons AMCA senior level.
Then away for many years before a come back after Eddie Rouse lent me his bike for a Cheshire rusty riders event, Had a great time trying to keep up with Roy Dugdale.
Finished last for most of the first season before getting back to some sort of pace for the next year or two. Piped at the post by Niel Perrone for both Cheshire and Lancs tittles but made the masters for the first time in 2005.
Never say never again so who knows whats next. Also had the chance to ride speedway tracks again in the Stoke and buxton meetings and enjoyed those emensly. I also wish to mention my good mate Andy Fairbrother who has been helping me all this time from the age of 9 both in the workshop at home and at the meeting. It would be good if you could use this picture of me and Andy together at a Pickering meeting a couple of seasons ago with good friend and big meeting sponsor Dave Spencer in the back ground. Just before i took flight and headed for the farmers gate ( sH 1 t myself there i can tell you.
Would also like to take this chance to thank all the people who take time out to put these meeting on for use with out those people there would be none of the above memorys.
Thanks
PS
also had a couple of good get togethers over here with the boys see attached photo of a barbie at our last summer.

Hope you are well

best regards
John

From left in 1992 at Marishes rd, Thornton le Dale are Richard Ashworth junior (No 79, remember, in the 250's) Gary Liversidge, at that time a 250 rider before he went sidecar, Rob Almond, centre, who was the 250 centre champion of East Yorks at that time, and on right, Ray Liversidge, who went on to race 1000 R/H sidecars.

Paul Midgley, passenger, and John Hildreth, Driver on the Magnum Kawasaki 1000 outfit in approx 1992, it was these two who get the credit for todays revival in 1000cc R/H grass outfits Oop North that has resulted in the talents of Rob Bradley with 3 British titles, and the super talents of the other Northern outfits inc Winterburns etc. John and Paul did some demonstration rides on their own in about 91, and the class took off again after a drought of a few yrs after Teasdale etc.

Rob Bradley on left, Dave Brown in Middle, and SDA with Paul Cross Memorial Trophy at Pickering & Dmc presentation, Forest & Vale Hotel in November 1997.

Four pics below, thanks to Rodger Adlem once again.

one of my favourite riders from the 60's, Geoff Pugesley, i seem to remember he was from Stokesley, nr Middlesborough. A regular at all Northern events, and always Pickering & DMC.

A fantastic photo of Richard Greer, note the straw bales on the inside, and its not that long ago they were still used either!!!!

Dave Gatenby, No 50, pic kindly sent by Rodger Adlem.

A great photo of ex Hull rider (vikings) and current promoter of speedway and ice meetings, Graham Drury, on his JAP grasser.

Mick Webster and Dave Hunter Magazine interview, sent in thanks to Rodger Adlem. Also below some 90's Days of old pics.

Thanks to Rodger Adlem for this magazine interview

At the Lakes event in 1994, at Holme, near Burton. Leading is Stephen Morriss, on an RMS 500, in 2nd is Barrow Flyer John Pepper, ex British Sand race champion, and in 3rd, Roy Holding sponsored Frankie Killeen (43) from Warrington. Frankie is as far as i know resident in Australia, and if you see this Frankie, send me an update on what you are doing, and a pic or two for the Portrait gallery.

This one is not so old, but was from a Pickering event in 1999, from left, No 0 is Too Tall John Hartley, 74 is Captain 'Drop Off' Scott Wilson, Then, leading, is No 34 Stephen Morriss, white helmet behind stephen is i think 29 John Shipley, then in 2nd is 58 Richard Ashworth, then on right in blue, with white helmet is, i think, Stuart Dent, and finally on right, from Grimsby, is Neil Smith, on an absolutley fantastic 350 JAP.

Thanks again to Rodger Adlem for some programme memories, and Photos, relevant to us ere Oop North, Rodger has sent a lot of great stuff covering Northern and Southern riders and tracks, which i'm very happy to feature on here..............................now then, hows about resurecting the North Vs South meetings over two legs, and 250/350/500 solos, and 1000 s/cars, 4 riders each solo class, and 3 riders sidecars, and use this to support another meeting, one south, one North..............good idea to me, and one i would push for at Pickering if interest was shown......................phone me (SDA) or e-mail with your thoughts, or use our message board.

Brian Maxted adorns the cover of this Auto 66 British Championships programme cover from 1972 at Burton Constable Hall, near Beverley, Hull. I was there watching at the time, Peter Collins was riding GBS frames i remember, made by a chap called Gordon Booth i was told recently. A fantastic meeting with a big crowd, and a awesome setting in the Hall grounds. Also had the car Chitty Chitty Bang Bang for the presentation.

1972 solo entry list from????? great names in list, Note No 24, Terry Wilson, his 250 Ruskin framed BSA 250 Starfire was bought by my brother Richard Ashworth in 1973, on which he rode at the Northern scene, and promptly broke his shoulder blade.............painfull, Another name, not in this programme, but from the same era, was Osbaldwick, York rider Ian Dodsworth, who had a 250 Hagon BSA C15, which he upgraded to a new Maico 250 in 1973, i (SDA)bought the C15 off him, my 1st grasser..........................magic. I rode 21 for years and years, but in the early days i rode No 9, and at one point 141...........much to the annoyance of Pickerings own David Brown, who as many of you know, hates three figure numbers.

A 1972 grasstrack sidecar programme list ,and for those witth memories, there was some awesome names in this list, BUT, make no mistake, i was there in those days, and todays 1000cc boys are just as awesome in these big meetings, though i do miss the chicanes that so many were skilled on, but realise at todays speeds, on the modern type circuit, chicanes would be unacceptable, and virtually dangerous to ride.

Mick Webster and John Justice from York, they were British Champions in 1966.Mick is father of 10 times World Motor racing sidecar champion Steve, the most successfull sidecar roadrace driver of all time

Mick Dawkins and John Hall, John is Father of Scunthorpe speedway rider Richard, and Mick still has the Motor cycle shop entering Bedale from the A1.

The Two photos below kindly sent by Rodger Adlem..................Great meetings, and great memories from the Lydden International.

From the 1st Lydden International in September 1968, here is a great shot of 250 king Chris Stewart, seen here riding a 500 Hagon, leading none other than Graham Hurry.

The 1st ever Lydden International was held in September 1968, and here are the 1st 3, winner, centre, is of course Don Godden, 2nd, on left, was the great John Britcher, and 3rd, still doing the buiseness after a lot of years is Reg Luckhurst, pictured right.

The Incredible Grant Faulkener, and a haul of some of the great trophies he has won in his grasstrack career from the early 80's to his retirement in 1990. he had a brief comeback in the British 250 final in 1993. A Euro runner in his time and very spectacular to watch.

Chris Archer, from The Navenby Junior Grasstrack awards night in approx 1980. Note some young faces and names in the pic with him

Chris Archer sent me this from his early days riding,

Note the names he had to race against............awesome

Dennis Teasdale and Keith Chapman winning the British 1000 R/Hand title at Exeter in 1981. Thank you to Alan Whale for photo. Further Photos of Teasdale with other passengers below, and also in Championship pages (2) in gallery

Thank you to Alan Whale for these photos of Colin Earl, from Ormsby, Middlesboro. Who can forget the races he produced in the early 90's with Tony Atkin among others.

The Earl Of Ormsby...................The talrented Colin Earl. I have many good memories of racing with Colin, though i never had anything like his ability. His Dad, also named Colin, was always ready to help, from advice to lending me a bike, which he once did at a Spalding meeting, only for me to shred a rear tyre, and Colin was out on it in the next race!!!!!!!!!11 The Startline gave us time to swap a wheel fortunatly. Thats grasstrack, always good people to help, and a great camaradrie in the pits.

It Does'nt get any better than this...................fronting a proggramme as champion............The Earl of Ormsby.

Colin Leading in the Dumbleton Dazzler, from i think The Fryer, Paul Fry, and if i'm not mistaken, Jason Handley.

Another 7 great photos sent in from Rodger Adlem, a mixture of Southern Stars and Northern Stars,,,,,,,,,,,thank youm Rodger.

Here is one of the greatsof Yorkshire Grasstrack, and Pickering & Dmc in particular, It's Yorks Mick Webster/John Justice, winning the British Championship at Rhodes Minnis in 1967. Pickering & Dmc have argueably produced the most British Champions in Grasstrack than probably any other club, From Mick Webster/John Justice, Dennis Teasdale/Keith Chapman Rob Bradley with passengers Tris Winterburn/Shaun Simpson notably in the sidecars to Jason Handley, Paul Cooper, David Knowles etc in the solos.

Remember the great Dave Nourish?? we all do, and here he is in 1967 at Hindby, Wiltshire, being followed by one of my favourite chairs of the time, Yorks Dave Hunter

Bruce Ford-Dunn racing a right hand outfit, with style, back in the 60's.

This is Pete Randell, not to familiar to me oop here, but i gather he rode successfully down south, and here he is pictured at Bredhurst in 1966.

Martin 'Spud' Tatum, father of former multi World longtrack champion Kelvin, seen here in 1963 leading Reg Luckhurst at Rochester.

This is Richard Greer, riding at Fordham in 1969.

The Great Don Godden, seen here riding at Lydd in 1970. Don Goddden rode a couple of times oop North, once at Bagby, Thirsk i remember, and also at Burton Fields, Pickering. Further down you will see a newspaper cutting about this.

Below are 6 photos, and a newspaper cutting kindly sent to me by Sandi, from Wiltshire, Wife (i think!!!!!) of Rodger Cant. Rodgers passenger was Tony Curtis, (not the actor!!!!) So from Ooooooooooooo Arrrrrrrrrrrr land, to Oooooop North, we grassers stick together. p.s even if usually us oop northers are a bit faster............ouch.

Rodger and Tony taking the chequered flag for the Whoppa in 1982, with Tony punching the Air in delight...........................always a sweet moment winning.

Here is a shot of the Wimborne Whoppa in 82, Rodger Cant & Tony Curtis 16, just behind 51 Rodger Measor, with 69 , My Hero, Dennis Teasdale, just between them. No 2 Steve Smith, was about to retire with a broken Sidecar S/arm. Rodger Cant and Tony Curtis went on to win the Whoppa, and in 83 went to Silverstone, and finished 3rd. Remember at this time, Teasdale was Champion, and Smith, as now, was just awesome.

A Top Form shot of Rodger & Tony.................flying in 83

Silverstone in 1983 for Rodger Cant and Tony Curtis

Here is a newspaper cutting of their acheivements.......................that is a proud thing to have in your local paper .

Having fun at Gratley in 1983 are Rodger Cant, and passenger Tony..................well remembered by me was the Cowboy hat. Brings back memories, and thats what these pages are all about.

Here is the bad side of racing, and sometimes painfull, here Tony Curtis crawls to a motionless Roger Cant after upending the outfit in 1983. They were back racing 5 weeks later after Rodgers broken coller bone had healed.

The selection of photos below (12 black and white) represent a good southern scene in the early to mid 60's, and i am indebted to Rodger Adlem for these photos, thank you. Rodger tells me that the sidecar men could ride successfully both Right and Left hand outfits.

Remember Spalding and Tongue End club?? Good days, and here is Barry Simpson on the brilliant Threekingham track nr Grantham, good days, especially the two day events that were very popular.

Below is a sample of pics, reports ans adverts kindly sent in by Rodger Adlem, look for Don Godden, John Britcher, Alf Hagon, Mick Webster among others.........Thanks Rodger.

A Report of the Poster below, the National held at Pickering in 1966.

1966, The advert for Bagby which feautured all the top stars who were preparing for the National the next day at Pickerings Burton Fields track, well known back in those days. At the National, it had threw it down with rain for a couple of days previous, and rained all day too, and the racing was as you'd expect.........a mudbath. Dave Brown was in charge back then, as he still is now, and he got all misty eyed when i showed him this, but also said the club had lost an awfull lot of money on the event. Thanks to Rodger Adlem for this,,,,,,,,,,,,excellent.

Rodger Adlems super pic of Rodger Measor and Trevor Bullock, at Smarden, Kent, 1972.

Rodger Adlems brilliant picture of Mick Humberstone and Hayden Gavey in 1972 at Smarden, Kent Rodger sent me the details, and i wiped off e-mail after downloading pic, and memory tells me the date etc as i forgot to write the details down,,,,what a super picture Rodger..thanks.

This shot from Rodger Adlem, feautures No 3 Scotlands Brian Brown, from Pitenweem, Scotland, leading none other than Ivan Mauger at the very 1st Lydden International in 1968.

Thanks go to Carl Croucher, again, for the following Photos below, approx 36 , wonderfull photos.

Top Left is Steve Hartley at Hereford racecourse, mid 70's top right is the flying Welshwizzard, Cyril Jones, below left is Dave Baybutt in the mid 70's, and bottom right is a very rare photo of the great Bjorn Knuttson at Rhodes Minnis, Kent, in the 60's.

From the top, the great Arne Hendricksen, demonstrating a replica of his 'hinged' sidecar that was banned in the south east centre after just a few meetings in the 1960's. The concept was a solo with a 'hinged' sidecar on, very fast, and controversial. below is a past masters event shot from Andover in the 80's of 22 Lew Coffin, and 350, the equally great Alf Hagon.and below that, one of the fastest grassers i ever saw, a rider who should have done far more meets on the grass, and should have been a multi champion, he certainly has the talent, THE MOTOR, Peter Carr.

A rider still in the Elite Leauge today, for the all conquering Reading Bulldogs, but a rider brought up on Pickering & DMC Grasstracks, and once seen, never forgotten, the spectacular Andy 'Foxy' Smith, who's dad Frank was a top rider for years in the 60's and 70's, pics of Frank further down, and also brother of another fine grasser, Paul Smith, who won the prestigious Paul Cross memorial meeting at Pickering in 1993.

John Britcher, both wheels off the ground on his DSS Jap from Thorogoods farm, Aldham, Colchester in the National Grasstrack, British Championships round 2, 21st June, 1970.

One of my heros, John Britcher, complete with Bulmers race jacket, from Hereford 1974 i think.

Top is a shot of the great Colin Banks and passenger Wally Brammer, great shot of Brammer on the side!!!!!!!!!! below, one of the great P.C Peter Collins at Rochester airport 1970's, i saw Peter Collins in his first ever meeting after his 16th birthday at slaters lane, Pickering, and was immediatey gobsmacked, you just knew when you'd seen a future world champion.................Now when i first saw Joshua Auty in junior grass i thought the same, and i ain't changed my mind now he's in conference speedway.

Don Godden, in a Past Masters meeting from Andover in the early 1980's

From the top, Don Godden, in the Fastest lap time race at Meadle, Bucks, in the early 80's, below is Gerald Short in the same Fastest lap mode, same meeting, and below is another North vs South pic, more below if you scroll down, of Mick Humberstone and Hayden Gavey, from Sleaford Lincs, 1972, also on Sidecar is possibly Nelson Green.

On the top is the great Scot, Bert 'Haggis' Harkins, from possibly Lydd, signed too, and below is Graham Hurry at Great Chart, Kent in the early 70's. (Carl Croucher was Grahams pusher at the time)

From the top is, Graham Hurry on a 250 at the bumpy Lamberhurst track in Kent, 1970. Below is a 1960's shot of Reg Luckhurst.

This is a picture i've scanned out of a Grass track pictorial magazine that was very kindly given to me by Carl Croucher, and its a pic of the one and only John Rhodes, from Earswick York at the time. John always had the best machinary available, and took them to meetings in a trailor on the back of a new Jaguar car. This pic doesn't show it, but John always wore a striped jersey on top of his leathers, and was fondly nicknamed the Bumble Bee, among other names!!!!! He went on to become a speedway referee. A good rider, especially when seeing the red mist!!!If you look at the writing above the picture, it confirms what we all know, Pickering bends are wide and smooth................usually.

Top Left is Ted Tucker, and how low can u go, Dave Ward, below is John Britcher from Lydden Speedtrack in the 1980's, bottom left is Pete Robson and Dave Hops leading Dennis Teasdale and passenger, probably John Atkinson. On Right is one of my favorite riders of the 70's, brother of the Late Simon Wigg, its Julian Wigg, and below is a page 3 girl with a bessoted John Atkinson next to her and an envious Dennis Teasdale, who surely deserved more than the one British Title he won.

A Great photo of Grasstrack, the winning South Eastern Centre solo team of 1970, from Rhodes Minnis, Kent. Standing from left are, Stan Luck, Graham Hurry, Dave Spam, John Britcher, Graham Banks, Malc Simmons. Kneeling from left, Chris Stewart, Roland Duke, and team Manager, Jim Walby.

This is a rare Photo of the Late Martyn Piddock, who lost his life in the Lockeren Mini Coach crash on 14th July 1970, along with fellow West Ham Speedway Team mates. R.I.P Martyn.

Top photo is a super shot from one of the Internationals of the 70's of ,from left, Ivan Mauger, Steve Hartley, and P.C, Peter Collins, below is an amazing shot of Gerald Short, as Carl Croucher, who kindly sent these photos says..........WOW

Top is a mid 60's shot of Reg Luckhurst and Super 'Simmo' Malcolm Simmons, and the action shot is of 'Simmo' in the 60's...........super shot.

One of the greatest grass riders of all time, and innovater of the Godden engine/Manufacturing success story. The great Don Godden, winning the 1st ever Lydden meeting in 1968. Apologies from me to Roger Adlem, and to you all, for over editing this pic, and the 2 below, as i've lost the superb quality they had. Rodger is going to send me some pics on CD in image form, so i'll be more carefull with these.

A Great Chicane shot of Mick Webster and John Justice from Stockbury, Kent in the late 60's. Mick of course, from York, and was British champion. His son Steve went on to i think 10 WEorld road race sidecar titles, recently retiring last year 2005.
