History of Pickering & DMC.....
Pickering club has a rather long history, and a very interesting history too. If you look closly at the photograph above, you will see the date 1924 and the words 1st Meeting of PMC,This was probably the 1st time the club had a collective photo taken, as the records show, that the club was actually formed on 6th December 1923, incredible that it's still here today. For those that know the town of Pickering, the collection of motorcyclists collected in this meeting of the club at the bottom of the Market Place, outside the Bank which is now the HSBC Bank. The building is still the same all these years on with no alterations to it at all. This club must be one of the oldest surviving Motor cycle clubs in the U.K. and without doubt, it has put on more events from Hill Climb, through to the present day Trials, Moto X and Grasstrack than probably most clubs not just in the U.K, but the World. Hopefully with your support as Riders, spectators, and Helpers, we can continue long into the future, after all, it's not to long to our 100th year.
The Club ran through the 20's and most of the 30's before the 2nd World War put a stop to procceedings. A while after the war ended, in the Village of Middleton, approx 1 mile from Pickering, the club paperwork and certain belongings were found in a bag in the attic of the Village Garage (Still trading to this day) and the club was once again up and running it actually reformed on 3rd October 1949, courtesy of another local Garage propriator, Bernard Harland, also Issac Weighell (Yet another Garage owner) Eric Taylor, a Mr Milestone, and Jack Hoggard. In 1950 the club ran a hill climb, although the whereabouts i'm not too sure of, and that was the start to competition that is running to this day. On the 14 May 1951 the club ran it's 1st grasstrack since before the war, and on 14th April 1951, the club ran it's 1st Scramble (Moto X) The Secretary in those days was Jack Hoggard, until the arrival of David Brown, who many of you know,in July 1965 as secretary David actually joined the club on 30 Janurary 1959. To this day, David is the inspiration and Driving force behind this club, along with a small, but loyal band of helpers. The club has run most of the Moto x over the years at the Crook Farm Venue, about 3 miles out of the Town, and in more recent times, still run there, but also at another couple of new venues that are proving very popular with the riders.
On the Trials front, every class is catered for from twin shock onwards. The Trials venues vary, and over the years have included Hovingham Quarry, Riseborough Hagg Farm and Yatts Farm, all within a short distance of Pickering. The club is also well known for running a large amount of meetings in each domain every year. For example: between 5 and 8 grasstracks, 4 to 6 Moto X and similar Trials events. All of this is down to the enthusiasm and hard work of David Brown. As Testement to the club, it has run up to Feburary 2007, 1 hill climb, 251 grasstracks, 200 trials, and 163 Moto X (Scrambles), But the meetings out of this run and organised by David Brown are as follows: 216 Grasstracks, 176 Trials, and 167 Moto X's, absolutly incredible, and with the help of the club members, and Dave's continued enthusiasm, a lot more to come. If you'd like to help, please get in touch, more hands, lighter work and more fun!!! Youth events were started in 1968, and are flourishing again in the past couple of years, which is an encouraging sign.
Our Grasstracks are usually on very good tracks, flat and firm, though one track we used was what some would say a proper grasstrack!!! from this season, after realising this had given the club some problems, the track has been put out to grass, so to speak.
At the end of every season, usually the last Saturday in November, the club hold its annual Dinner Dance/Prizegiving. With the History and long life of this club, there are some beautifull historic Silver trophies awarded in all Domains to the Club Champions, A.C.U Centre Champions, and many other awards and trophies. As the Homepage says, the Club of past, Present and Future Champions.
